In January 1999, my then band Superman's Suicide got into our drummer's step-father's car and made our way across the river to a little town in Pennsylvania called Tullytown. Prior to this adventure we had only recorded one demo with the assistance of this very same step-father. By any standard it was not very good. So when we entered Echo Studios, it was the most exciting thing for our 15/16 year old hearts.
From what I can remember, we tracked everything in one night and returned the following day for mixing. Everything was recorded to tape because that was still the standard at the time. We went home with the master reel, a few DAT tapes, and a cassette copy which was just a duplicate of the reel. We only made an undetermined number of cassette copies to sell at our high school and some local shows. None of those included the song "Tend To Find"
Before recording our very first demo, I wrote "Hide My Head". The title is a reference to a Suicide Machines' lyric. Prior to these recordings, I had always been our guitarist. It was much easier for me to nail this song than it was for John, so that's why I play guitar on this song only.
"Sk8r's Rights" was another song from our previous demo. Before it was common for towns to have skate parks, we would take over mostly empty parking lots with our own hand built ramps and skate our teenage frustrations away.
"Tend To Find" has never been released. I can't remember much about writing this song other than I believe Francisco wrote the lyrics and I was supposed to sing it. Either I couldn't get the vocals down or it wasn't whatever we were going for. Francisco was embarrassed about singing for whatever reason and I believe that's why it never got released.
"Selfish" was a song that started off as another song but completely evolved. The reason being, the other guys didn't like the ska punk origins of the original song. They decided to change a few of the chords and it became a much angrier song than it ever was. "Selfish" and "Hide My Head" were the only two songs prior to 2021 that ever made it to digital thanks to a double CD compilation we were a part of.
Almost 10 years ago, Francisco and I came across the original reel for this demo and I always dreamed of having the entire thing remixed and remastered by today's standards. However, if the tape still exists now, it's not accessible to me.
For now, this 2021 digital transfer from the original DAT tape is the best chance you'll get to hear a bunch of 15 and 16 year olds blast through 4 songs in 6 minutes about things that are embarrassing to us in our late 30s
